Planning our future ...

More than 50 people participated in the Design Charrettes in August and October 2006. Following is a list of wants and needs which will be discussed at the next meeting.

We Want To:

Improve Traffic Flow:

 Some Ideas:

  • Annex area west of City to include rec center. This will square up the city; entice industries and more residential areas.
  • Extend 10th Street to Hwy 67 Routes truck traffic around downtown creates more commercial development area
  • Finish and extend 16th street
  • Exit ramp off I-30 at country club road
  • Change parking downtown with a deck or garage
  • Turn lanes at McDonalds and Wal-Mart
  • Extend a road running parallel to I-30 for industry/commercial in the north part of town
  • Add truck stop and commercial stuff to that area. (I-30 parallel road)
  • Add industrial park to wpm alone in west section of town
  • Add a  Truck Bypass at Highway 53 Junction
  • New Bridge at Hwy 53
  • Extend Malone
  • Add additional I-30 exits at Country Club
  • Annex Caddo Valley
  • Extend 26th Street
  • Finish, extend and improve Pine Street
  • Airport Expansion
  • Annex for Residential Development (Developed Community of houses 1600 to 2500 sq ft) in the South West section.
  • Annex Caddo Valley
  • Add roads running NW/SE from Red Hill to US 67 and Pine and U.S. 67
  • Add roads near river
  • Add 4-lane
  • Exit ramps at Military
  • Bicycle lanes

Encourage Commerce and Economic Development:

 Some Ideas:

·        Light industrial park needs growth
·        Encourage small businesses to open
·        Commercial development
·        Along 2nd and 3rd to river
·        Along extended 10th street
·        Hotels along 51/26 by Highway dept.
·        Hotels off I-30
·        Hotel/shopping on Hwy 7S
·        Add commercial area near river at AR51
·        Add River Entertainment District on River
·        Movie Theater, Restaurant and retail area on WP Malone St.
·        Expand entertainment
·        Stores downtown

 

 

Increase opportunities for Recreation:

 Some Ideas:

  • Recreation: fishing, wharf on river access to the bluff
  • Movie theater
  • Joint educational consortium brought speakers, organizations, etc, free, cultural.
  • Bird Watching places
  •  Are there rapids up the river? develop them for tourism, (see what Malvern is doing)
  • Outdoor theatre
  • Restrooms at Park near AR 51
  • Develop lowland area between Rose hill for park spread around city
  • Expand Ouachita Park Area
  • River improvement on both sides
  • Trials expand and improve
  • Link student activities to city

  Improve Urban Development:

 Some Ideas:

  • Utility Expansions
  • Land Use
  • Improve Gateways
  • Amenities to attract executive class
  • Upscale Hotel/Motel
  • Streets
  • Public Safety

 

Make our City Beautiful:  

Some Ideas:

  • More advertising of our assets to build spirit, Feaster trail
  • Clean up the town, repair streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks
  • Resolve Propane Co. issues
  • Improve all city entrances at gateways to city
  • Upscale look improved highway facilities make it look welcoming signs
  • Fish rest on river possibly on anchored barge
  • Visitors center with info and place for chamber office on PineStreet
  •  Extend biking/jogging trails (tie in river and ball fields)
  • Make town more aesthetically pleasing
  • (Bike bridge extend across river to east)
  • Turn Country Club Road into an attractive, tree-lined parkway
  • Turn 7/67 North into a Parkway into town and connect to Pine street.
  • Make Pine street a 4-lane
  • Curbs and Gutters
  • More Parks and Family activities
  • Expand History emphasis
  • Preserve downtown
  • Take greater advantage’ of history

Increase Available Housing: 

Some Ideas:

  • Add condos on Country Club
  • Annex NW corner for additional residential development
  • Add a 3k-5k housing development gated community
  • Add intermediate housing off Country Club near friendship
  • Add affordable housing off wpm alone and off flowers
  • Add condos in NW section off twin oaks
  • Add medium-high end housing off Hollywood
  • Add affordable housing in the west area near Hollywood.
  • Annex Caddo Valley
  • Extend sewer/services west
  • Add a Residential Improvement District, (Brownstone type Development with rear access housing prices at $85k to 150K.) In between Caddo and Walnut
